Come and join us at this annual event, which features the opportunity to release coho salmon smolts into Stoney Creek. In addition, there are child-friendly displays and activities, live entertainment, and a concession tent, all hosted by our volunteers, community groups and organizations.
The ‘GSSO’ takes place on the second Saturday in May from 10am to 2pm in the grounds of the Stoney Creek Community School and has a strong reputation in the community, bringing a great turnout of participants and attendees, rain or shine!
This event is made possible by contributions from:
– our sponsors, who provide funding to cover the cost of running this event
– our exhibitors, who provide interesting displays to attract and occupy our attendees
– the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who provide the coho smolts for release
– the Sapperton Fish and Game Club, who provide assistance with the fish release
– the City of Burnaby, which supports and helps plan the event, and which contributes various exhibitors
– the Creekside Youth Centre, which provides the food
– the many students from Burnaby Mountain High School, who volunteer around the site
– the various entertainers from the Stoney Creek Community School and the local area
– members of the Stoney Creek Environment Committee, who host the SCEC booth, and who help set up before the event and clean up afterwards
– and the planning committee – consisting of SCEC members, City of Burnaby employees, local school representatives, and members of the community – which meets monthly from December through April, and conducts a post-event wrap-up meeting.
Community Participation
Community groups and organizations who support the Stoney Creek Environment Committee and the local environment are invited to provide an exhibit for this event. We encourage demonstrations, games or activities that provide interaction for families and children. Tent space, tables and chairs can be provided if required.
